If you are a Korean speaker who is working on improving your American accent, here is a quick tip.
Many Korean speakers have problems pronouncing the /w/ sound in words such as:
- question
- quiet
- quality
- quickly
- quarterly
- inquire
I’ve also heard this mistake with some of the Chinese (Cantonese) and Indian language speakers who I work with.
Remember that the letter Q in English has a /k+w/ sound. You must really round your lips to get the /w/ component of that sound correct.
If you are looking for an accent reduction book with special details for Korean speakers I recommend Mastering the American Accent.
I’ve used this book with the Korean speakers who I work with in my SKYPE accent reduction coaching program & they’ve found the lessons to be very helpful.
