All of my accent reduction clients read & write American English very, very well. They all have a strong command of grammar and vocabulary.
What they learn in their coaching sessions is how to make their SPOKEN English sound more fluid and natural. ♬
One way to do this is to use linking to blend sounds together.
Let me explain what I mean…..
In spoken English consonant sounds change depending on their location in a word or phrase. Here’s an example:
When a /d/ sound is followed by a /y/ sound the result is a /dʒ/ sound. This sound occurs between these words:
- could you sounds like couldjew
- would you sounds like wouldjew
When a /t/ sound is followed by a /y/ sound the result is a /tch/ sound
- can’t you sounds like cantchew
- won’t you sounds like wontchew
You see….articulating every sound exactly as it is written will NOT improve your accent. Articulating every sound’ll probably make your English sound more choppy!
Learning to use these types of sound blending will make your pronunciation sound more smooth and natural.
I teach you these techniques for natural sounding speech in my accent reduction coaching course.
If you are an international professional with a strong command of grammar and vocabulary who wants to take your communication skills to the next level, accent reduction coaching may be just what you need!
