How do you pronounce complex?
One word (actually 2 words) that my accent reduction coaching clients frequently ask me about is complex.
In American English the word complex has 2 different pronunciations.
When complex is used as a noun, it’s stressed on the first syllable as shown below ~
I live in a large apartment complex.
When complex is used as an adjective, it’s stressed on the second syllable as shown below ~
That algorithm is really complex.
There are scores of words like this in American English in which the syllable stress determines the meaning of the word.
