How do you pronounce four & for?

Susan, how do you pronounce the words four and for. What’s the difference between these words?

The preposition for
Most of the time* we say the preposition for with a reduced schwa vowel sound.
We say it like this /fɚ/.
The number four
We say the number four with a nice sharp /or/ as in Orange vowel sound.
Just to be clear
☆ The number 4, will usually be said with a nice clear /or/ as in Orange vowel sound.
☆ The preposition for will usually be said with a reduced schwa vowel sound /fɚ/.
Here are some sentences with the words for & four.
- I’ve lived in California fɚ four years. For is pronounced as /fɚ/.
- I went to grad school fɚ four years. For is pronounced as /fɚ/.
- What are you waiting for? * For is pronounced with /or/ as in Orange vowel sound at the end of a sentence.
In order to speak with an American accent you’ve goddə learn to speak using reduced words such as fɚ, wannə , tə & goddə.
