One way to improve your American accent and sound more friendly to native listeners is to soften the consonant sounds at the ends of words.
It works like this…
When one word ends in a consonant and the next word begins with a consonant, hold back a bit when you say the final consonant in the first word.
For example, when you say~
“finished quickly”, hold the final sound in finished (don’t drop it completely) as you move to the /kw/ sound in quickly.
That will make it sound nice and smooth!
When you say~
“old man“, hold the final sound in old as you move to the /m/ sound in man.
That’ll make it sound nice and smooth! ♬
Many non native speakers tend to pronounce final consonant sounds with too much emphasis. That doesn’t sound right to a native American English speaker. It may make your speech sound abrupt or unfriendly. ☹ You don’t want that!
