How to make friendly small talk with Americans
The people who I work with in my American accent coaching program, are often discouraged when it comes to making friendly small talk with Americans.
But there’s an easy way to to this!
An excellent technique for initiating small talk is asking questions.
Here’s how one of my clients put that advice to work.
David, (not his real name) used my advice for initiating small talk with excellent results.
Here’s what he told me~
” Susan I did what you suggested and during a slow time at work, I approached one of my American colleagues and asked him some questions. I started by asking him how long he’d worked at the company. Then I asked about his family. It turns out that we both have two girls so we had a lot to talk about. I think that the whole conversation lasted about 5 minutes. The next day he greeted me by name. I can’t tell you how nice it feels to be making an American friend!”
Try this simple technique
If you haven’t tried asking your colleagues (or neighbors) friendly questions yet, I encourage you to try this.
