How to Pronounce Want & Won’t

One of the most common questions people ask me is how to pronounce the words:

  • WANt
  • WON’t

These words are very similar, so it’s an excellent question!

The difference is in the vowel sound.

How to pronounce want

To pronounce the word WANT correctly, use an /ɑ/ as in Olive vowel sound (ahhh).

This is the same vowel sound in the word father.

You can hold the sound of the /t/.  That’ll make WANT sound less aggressive!

How to pronounce won’t

To pronounce the word WON’T correctly, use an /ow/ as in Rose vowel sound.

This is the same vowel sound in the word loan.

Again, you can hold the sound of the /t/.  That’ll make WON’T sound less aggressive!
