Take responsibility for your communication

Hi, it’s Susan with advice on how to communicate clearly in American English.

Take responsibility for your communication

During a coaching session with Vinny this week, I asked him why he wanted to improve his American accent.

Vinny said~

“I feel that it’s my responsibility to make sure I communicate clearly. The Americans in my company can’t understand me, and I need to understand why. Once I understand why, I need to fix it.”

Vinny decided to work on his American accent skills because he knew that his American colleagues were struggling to understand him.

He didn’t have to sign up for training. He signed up because he wanted to improve the way he communicates.

What’s your reason?

What’s your reason for wanting to improve the way you speak American English?

• Do you need to communicate more professionally at your workplace?

• Do you need to speak more clearly on the phone?

• Do you want to speak more clearly with your child’s teacher?

Everyone may have a slightly different reason. But if you want to communicate clearly, no one is going to fix it for you. You’ll have to take responsibility for that.
