The English Language Training Institute (ELTI) in Calcutta is working to correct the English pronunciation of 60 schoolteachers in their two-day workshops.

One of the teachers had it right when he said: “We are habituated to speak in a certain way. We have to first unlearn what we know and then relearn the words afresh again.”

The teachers are learning to pronounce sounds such as /zh/ sound and they are learning which letters are silent in spoken English such as the /h/ sound in the words herb and honest.

If you are an English language teacher working in India be sure to subscribe to the ELT Weekly Newsletter to get tips, techniques and articles on teaching English communication skills.
