The Importance of the Schwa Sound
I want to tell you about the schwa vowel sound.
Schwa is the most common sound is in both American and British English.
It sounds it like a weak “uh”.
The symbol for the schwa sound is /ə/.

This little “uh” may not seem important to you. But it is!
That’s because schwa is the sound we use for vowels that are reduced.
And American English speakers use a lot of reduced vowel sounds when we speak.

- technoləgy (1 schwa sound)
- dəvəlopmənt (3 schwa sounds)
- Susən (1 schwa sound)
- əmerəcə (3 schwa sounds)
- Canədə (2 schwa sounds)
You can’t SEE the schwa sound, but if you listen, you can hear it. It’s everywhere!
The Most Common Sound in American English
Remember, the schwa sound/ə/ is the most common sound in spoken English.
That means that you MUST know how to use schwa if you want to speak English like an American.
