Over the years, I’ve taught American English pronunciation to many Chinese & Brazilian Portuguese speakers.
One mispronunciation that speakers from both of these languages often make is dropping word final sounds.
I’ve also found that when Brazilian & Chinese speakers do say word final consonant sounds, they say them so softly (without voicing) that American English listeners can’t even hear them.
This creates grammatical errors that cause problems with communication!
Word final sounds that Chinese, Brazilian and other speakers frequently omit include:
- /d/
- /s/
- /z/
- /v/
- /n/
Be need to be aware of this tendency if you are a Brazilian Portuguese or Chinese speaker.
Dropping word final sounds will make your English sound heavily accented and less professional!
