These Sounds are Critical for Professional Spoken English
In my accent reduction coaching program I often work with Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian & Chinese speakers.
These people are professionals living in North America, Singapore, South America & Europe.
One critical pronunciation error that speakers of these languages make is dropping word final sounds.
Word Final Sounds
When you drop word final sounds when speaking English, it creates grammatical errors.
These errors cause breakdowns in communication.
And I know that you don’t want that to happen!
Examples of Dropped Sounds
Word final sounds that Chinese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese speakers omit include:
- /d/
- /s/
- /z/
- /v/
- /n/
Word final sounds that Russian speakers omit include:
- /z/
- /y/
While you may think you’re saying these sounds, you may be saying them without voicing. If you do that, American English listeners won’t always hear them.
Speak in a Professional Manner
If you speak American English in a professional capacity, you need to be aware of this tendency to drop sounds.
Dropping word final sounds will make your English sound much less educated and less professional!
